A New Way Of Doing Things

I was tired yesterday with no afternoon obligations so I hauled out One Hour Wargames, my 54's and The Square Brigadier and had a small, quick, and rather dissatisfying clash of advance guards over an isolated hill in the middle of nowhere. Having time left over I started thinking back to last fall's ideas about a different, more 'Old School' approach to my gridded games. In no time at all I had decided that I needed to change the grid, rebase all of my 54's and paint extra figures to bring the units back to 8 figures each. Wisely, at that point, I called a recess and left the room.

Today was a snow day, lots of time for some proper analysis of the issues and possible solutions and time for a test game of a  different, more traditional approach with bigger, multi-stand units.
The NorthWest Mounted Rifles dismount and open fire.
(Ok ok, here they appear to be armed with lances and pistols but that's merely artistic licence. )

The result is much closer to my Hearts of Tin rules than to the Square Brigadier but uses the grid for measuring to avoid the mid-game search for rulers and squinting at small numbers(and not just because my eyes are dim and I'm occasionally stubborn).

It'll take me a while to get the quick jottings translated into (hopefully) clear rules but not too long.  Essentially standard units will switch to 4 stands of 3 infantry (because that's how they're based and partially organized now), 3 stands of 2 cavalry and a gun stand with 2 crew + a limber stand with 2 crew.

My grid of 6" squares is now a grid of 3" squares (theoretically at this point) each of which will hold 1 stand. The stands of a unit must maintain unit integrity by staying in adjacent or diagonally touching squares unless they are detached to become a separate unit, to garrison a house for example. Movement and shooting ranges are measured for each stand.

From there its pretty conventional but now, for example, my 6 unit forces saw 60 infantry and a gun fighting 48 infantry, 6 cavalry and a gun instead of 15 and a gun vs 12, 2 and a gun. The extra number of figures (or strength points)  allowed for more dice and thus a more average curve of results while still leaving room for extremes. At the same time, the reduced number of manoeuvre elements made each command choice more significant with less room for error thus increasing the tension and mental focus for players.
Mid-Game. The Queen's army is finally all on table but the Rebels are still straggling on and the hardest fighting is still ahead.

Next post should be a battle report. A link to the new rules should follow by the weekend.

Maruchan Ramen Wins Nobel Peace Prize

NOTE: This is a work of satire.

Somewhere in Scandinavia, on a crisp October afternoon, Nobel Committee chair, Berit Reiss-Andersen, emerges from locked doors after hours of deliberation, to announce the laureate of the 2017 Nobel Peace Prize. Journalists with cameras and microphones ready eagerly await the results.

"I am proud to announce that this year's Nobel Peace Prize goes to Maruchan Ramen for its efforts to save millions of American college students from death by starvation. Before Maruchan came along, it was expected that college students would go on a Gandhian diet in order graduate, provided, of course, that you survived. Maruchan changed this by deciding that instead of barely subsisting on breadcrumbs and apple cores, college students should subsist on paper noodles and sodium power. Those whose rib cages were otherwise showing could now maintain a minimum ninety pound body weight. It is certainly the miracle of our times that the wealthiest country in the world depends on a Japanese ramen company to feed its citizens seeking basic education necessary to participate in the economy. If anything, Maruchan has saved as many, if not more lives, than Mother Teresa and Norman Bourlag combined."

Questions soon followed.

"Aren't you disturbed by the fact that many take starvation to be an expected condition of basic college education?"

"Starvation builds character. Just ask Gandhi."

"Doesn't it bother you that knock-off Japanese cuisine is more affordable for college students than healthier alternatives like fruits and vegetables?"

"Your Orientalism is showing. Who are we to critique the Japanese by our standards of what is healthy? Don't they live longer than most?"

"Instead of relying on cheap noodles, shouldn't we pressure our political leaders to find solutions to the problem of hunger on college?"

"If college students were well-fed, Maruchan would go out of business, and all the Japanese robots who make ramen would be unemployed. We live in a globalized economy now, and your protectionist complaints would surely lead to a trade war."

"Are the rumors true that Maruchan will have a sexy anime waifu as its new mascot?"

"Of course they're true, it's a major part of the reason why they won the prize."

"Will there be hentai?"

"There's always hentai."

Journalists had attempted to get the reactions of college students to the prize, but at the very mention of food, they proceeded to try and eat the journalists. Alumni who had survived college on a Maruchan-only diet had all died of diabetes before journalists could get to them, as they were too busy paying off student loans to afford dialysis or organ transplant. When journalists tried to get in contact with Maruchan for their reaction, they were too busy fighting over whether their mascot should be a tsundere or a loli to be bothered.

Three Gaming Interfaces To Pay Attention To

In this post, I want to discuss some gaming interfaces and user experience features in games. I will use my three favorite games for this present post, but the subject is broader and allows a bigger discussion that I intend to return to, next month.

DEAD SPACE (PS3)

In the horror-fiction game Dead Space, the interface is something to pay special attention to. The character's (Isaac Clarke) main statuses are disposed in a very strategic way: the life meter is located on his back in the shape of a spinal light, the weapon ammunition is showed as a small number when you aim the gun and, finally, the game has an interesting resource that is a luminous laser to help you easily locate the way the character must go (and it saves time in the complex scenario maze).

HERO (Atari)

This one is a relic from the beginning of the video-gaming era. HERO is an interesting case of user experience (UX) and interface with very limited constrols. Atari's joystick has only one button and one directional stick; with only two resources, HERO's designers implemented a wide range of possibilities: when you press the red button in the joystick the character uses its laser vision to kill enemies; by pressing down the control stick the character launches a dynamite do open walls and, finally, when you hold the control stick up the character flies using a jetpack. A very rich interface and UX created using minimal resources.

Entwined (PS4)

One of my favorite indie games Entwined is a great case of interface and usability. All the gameplay is based on how you can manage the two control sticks from PlayStation's joystick. During the whole experience, you must control the two mystic entities by only using circular movements; the user experience is focused on coordinating two different positions simultaneously (a challenge to your dexterity). Entwined is an incredibly created game, using only circular movements in two control sticks, a master class of game design.

On the three cases related in the post, we can clearly see the ideas of how games must strategically use concepts from the user experience field. To finish this conversation I want to share some content from the site nForm about this subject:

"The user experience is not one simple action – it is an interconnected cycle of attempting to satisfy hopes, dreams, needs and desires. This takes the shape of individuals comparing their expectations to the outcomes generated by their interaction with a system. Managing expectations then becomes key to successfully providing a satisfying "return on experience" that delights users and generates shared, sustainable value".
